Barium and strontium ferrites are similar in terms of hardness and brittleness to that of a ceramic product material. Made up of approx. 90% iron oxide (Fe, O2) and approx. 10% alkaline earth oxid e (BaO or SrO), these are raw materials which are available in large quantities and are inexpensive. As is typical of oxide ceramics, they display relatively resistant behaviour towards moisture, solvents, alkaline solutions, weak acids, salts, lubricants and gas pollutants. Generally, hard ferrite magnets can be used without additional protection (i.e. coating), and are shaped by pressing. For anisotropic magnets, this takes place within a magnetic field. This provides the magnet with a preferential direction which in turn produces a considerable improvement in remanence.

 Multi-Pole Ferrite Magnets top

Pole oriented ferrite magnets were developed specifically for step motor applications. Performance is around 1.8 times higher than that of isotropic ferrite magnets. The base material for these magnets is designated BMTH-…, which is completed by adding the required pole number, thus: BMTH–10/10 pole, BMTH-12/12 pole, BMTH–24/24 pole
